Bahram the hunter, Bahram the poet, Bahram Gor the king. Many legends have been attributed to the great Sassanid king. His deeds, adventures and teachings have been incorporated into almost every culture and religion. He is even credited with being the source of the inspiration for the word serendipity. Bahram the fifth, known by his monicar “Bahram Gor”, was famous for his hunting prowess. His ability to handle difficult situations in the wild as well as in the royal courts made him stand out from amongst his dynasty.
The scene depicted in this plate is a combination of two famous Bahram Gor legends. The first being the royal hunt, Bahram’s favourite activity in which he would pursue infamously hard to catch prey such as the wild donkey and rabbit. The second being Bahram’s coronation involving grabbing the crown from within the grasps of two lions. In this rendition, Bahram came be seen fending off the two lions on foot while his steed flees the scene. His companion stand by as several game animals would have been the days prey can also be seen fleeing the scene as they sense the ensuing battle.
Surrounded by several bands of classica Iranian and Saee inspired motifs and meticulously detailed toranj-bandi, the Royal Hunt & The Two Lions decorative plate commemorates one of the most famous Iranian Shahs to date.
